Maureen Weldon

Dad did not like cats
until he met Blackie.

She was born in Scotland,
one of a litter of five;
in our bed-sit.

We found good homes for four of them.
But Blackie?

I had an idea.

I brought her
by train
in a box
form Glasgow to Bristol.

What a sweet little kitten,
the passenger sitting next to me said,
as I fed Blackie water from a doll’s bottle.

Dad met us at Temple Meads.

And what have you got in that box? he asked.
Happy Birthday, Dad!

It was, I think, love at first sight.
