Eileen Carney Hulme

Following Your Footsteps

Afternoon waves break as I bend
beachcombing, to unearth the past,
carpet shells, cowries
and a banded venus, others crushed,
unrecognisable, like centuries old hearts
shattered into a thousand pieces

I dip my hands into sea blue
and the ocean whispers its secrets,
layered breezes catch my thoughts
carry them beyond rocks
like unclouded dreams set free

I cradle my keepsakes
longing for your deep pockets,
your footsteps on sand,
larger than my own small markings
which, if I come again tomorrow,
will be lost to time, direction unknown.
