Petra Vergunst

The Mill Wheel

Autumn light softens
contours of geese
the crisp air
accentuates their narrative
casts them back to Icelandic shores
parted from the day before

Unbroken quietude
in the absence of silence

Circling incessantly
powered in silent passing
by a trickle of dappled silver
oath of autumn oak

In the darkness of stone
a cog groans
guides a smaller cog
sun and moon in orbit

Whisper of wings
pushing and pulling
roosting and feasting

a cog, a smaller cog
unbroken by silence
